Hi there!

A strange problem started occurring recently that I cannot understand.
Every time I plug my custom made pc in to my ethernet port (which works fine on other devices, namely xbox one and my laptop when used) the entire network crashes until I remove the connection from my PC and rest the router...

This is becoming more and more frustrating, I hope someone can help!

Solution
Since everything else works from the cable, if you still get the crash, there is a pretty good chance that the onboard Ethernet adapter of the desktop motherboard is faulty.

I would try setting the desktop adapter to a static address that is in the network range but outside the DHCP range, so if the gateway is 192.168.x.1 make the desktop Ethernet address 192.168.x.250 for example and see if it will connect, that is done from the same spot that you checked to see if it was automatic. If it still does not work, you will likely need a PCIe Ethernet card.

Okay, so I run on Windows 8.1, I use an Asus P8Z77-V LX Mobo and the router is a Netgear 'Virgin Media' Super Hub 2 (VMDG485). Do you need more info?

And to clarify, the same Ethernet cable on the same router port works fine with your laptop or XBOX, right?

With your laptop connected, open the command prompt box and type ipconfig and note the gateway IP address for the router listed under the Ethernet adapter. Then on the Windows 8 desktop open the network and sharing center control panel, click on change adapter settings, right click on the Ethernet adapter and select properties, double click on Internet Protocol version 4 and in the general tab check to see that the top selection (IP address) is automatic -- if not what is it set to?

If the adapter is set to automatic or if you can't find an Ethernet adapter in the network control panel, look into the device manager under network adapters and see if the Ethernet adapter is listed and says that the driver is working.

Cool, so I have my gateway IP from ipconfig, and I also found that the ethernet adapter is set as automatic under Internet Protocol Version 4.

..Oh and yes it works for my XBOX and laptop.

Great, thanks!
I'll try using a static address first but I feared the Mobo would be the issue.
