Specs for a home server and NAS PC

I'm planning to build a home server with FREENAS installed. What should I need to build one and I am planning to connect it on 3 PC's.

Depending on your needs, the build in the article might be overkill for you, but it walk you through the process. You could easily recycle nearly any dual-core or better system made in the last few years and build an excellent FreeNAS box. The big driver may be how much storage space do you need? Also, what is your budget for this project?
