hi everyone i had a few questions about using speedtest.net

while using speedtest.net, will i have different (lower) results if there are already many devices connected to my Comcast proved 2-in-1 modem/router? i am assuming the devices are using internet while i start the test. (probably streaming video)

when i do use a router and i am the only one connected to it, i get speeds of ~29mbps.
im also moving the router closer to my desktop upstairs. about 10 ft closer then the modem.
if i move the router back to where the modem/router is. i get speeds of around low 20'sMbs

and when i connect back to the modem/router, i get speeds of ~3-8 Mbs

i was also told by the tech guys that there are alot of hotspots around the area.

we're currently trying to setup an optimal LAN in our home. we are paying comcast to rent a modem/router and we're looking to get our own modem. we already have a tp-link WDR3500 router but are not currently using it because the gateway that comcast provided us can be connected to wirelessly. and are planning to get a cable modem if that really helps.
i have also heard that modem/router combo have notoriously bad wifi connection.

any answers and tips would be greatly appreciated

If you want an accurate speedtest.net results, you should connect to the router via ethernet cable.

Speedtest.net results have nothing to do with your local network speeds. It's for testing your internet connection, not your local network.

Your results with wireless speeds are pretty common, and yes if you get a separate cable modem and a good router you'll have better luck with your wireless speeds.

If you use 5Ghz whenever possible, you'll have less issues with interference from other networks. The 2.4Ghz spectrum is crowded because everyone and their brother has it, and there are only 3 real channels to use on it, and they're all full if you live in an apartment building.
speedtest.net only really counts when you are hardwired directly to the router.
Any WiFi will, at best, have the same overall speed. Or it will probably reduce the connection speed, depending on your particular WiFi scenario.

In my house, I can see a 20% drop, just by walking down the hall upstairs.

For instance...if you pay your ISP for "30mbps" and with a wired connection you see "30mbps"....and with a WiFi connection you see less....it is your WiFi in the house.

And if there are multiple devices currently connected and actively downloading something, especially WiFi...yes, your results from speedtest.net will be much lower.

speedtest.net should only really be used:
1. wired
2. to check the overall connection
3. with only one device actually doing something

Current modem/router or new one? It is impossible to say. Every house is different. Your current one may be better, or worse, than a different one.

Obviously, the best connection is a Cat5e direct to the router. But if you must WiFi, look into different router placement before buying new hardware.

What do you pay Comcast for?
What results do you get from speedtest.net when wired directly to the router?
