Speedfan core temp of 256C

hi all. i have been having a lot of lag on my computer lately and havent been able to pinpoint it. i just ran speedfan and loaded up lineage 2 mmo. it is saying my core temp is 256 degrees C. this mean i have bad cpu? i run windows experience and it gives score of 7.5. its a phen 965 be. what gives?

i tested mem, hard drive, graphics card - they all ok
i was thinking maybe my problem is mobo or cpu

That could be a bad cpu, bad sensor, bad MB......there is very little chance that your processor is actually running at that temperature. If you go in the BIOS you should be able to see the proc temp reading as well in there, what does it say?

256 degrees Celsius = 492.8 degrees Fahrenheit! If that was anywhere near correct, your entire house would be on fire. :lol:

Hw monitor, real temp, and even core temp are FAR more accurate than speed fan.

True but there are some older CPUs I have found that only SpeedFan works on. And then some older ones than that that none work on.

As others have said, Speedfan has accuracy issues. I've also found problems with accurate readings reported on a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5 motherboard with a Phenom II CPU. Hw monitor should give you accurate readings however.

i guess in the end, i know either the cpu or mobo is bad; i will test 965be cpu in a new mobo i have purchased and see wht happens. it's just a pain to detach the cooling systems and what not.

on another note, i did use "CPU Core Temp" and temps are all normal with no problems, but spybot said it has maleware "W3i.IQ5.fraud" so i deleted it. got it from core temp cpu main site.
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Freeze.com" in registry.

I think its just a compatibility issue. I'm thinking maybe theres a problem with some software programs and motherboards getting confused with an AM3+ board with an AM3 CPU, AMD Overdrive was giving me false temps on the Gigabyte board too. You didn't say what kind of board you had tho.

If you're having lag, Id run malware bytes and scrub, it could be a software issue.

ah sry for not mentioning more info:

older board is asus M4A87TD evo 870 with amd phenom ii x4 965 be
newer board is asus Sabertooth 990fx with amd fx 4170 be

i haven't found any malware/viruses besides recent cpu core temp program. i try to keep an eye on reg/startups/roots but this is true anything is possible!

EDIT: ran avira/superantispyware/malwarebytes/root analyzer - no problems!
