Is this game worth the time? I'm stuck with dial-up so no 300MB demos for
me.Thanks

It's OK. I never finished it, but I got it from the bargain bin and it
was fun for a while.

The big problem is that it took me a while to realise that it's an
archery tower building game, not an RPG or traditional RTS... pretty
much every map could be completed just by building a near-infinite
number of archery towers to kill the near-infinite number of monsters
that the computer would throw at you. There were times when I just left
the game playing overnight with archery towers and a few casters and
melee units to rack up some XP from the automated kills (though XP gets
slower and slower the more of a particular creature you kill, so that
didn't bring in huge amounts).

It was good, without being stupendous. The only thing that really turned
me off (Unless they've fixed it in a subsequent patch) was that some of
the later levels needed a *lot* of trudging back and forth, which got
quite tedious. If you can pick it up for a budget-level price, are
looking for an off-the-beaten-track RTS, and have some time on your
hands, go for it :)

Here's my take on it:

Strengths:
- new game concept (RPG-RTS mix with many missions playable with only
heroes as well as mainly armies),
- nice world,
- sidequests that work surprisingly well considering how few words they
use,
- beautiful,
- very long play-time,
- interesting rp system and character-building,
- above-average storytelling,
- excellent music,
- races that play different.

Flaws:
- extremely bad unit balance between some races (multiplayer isn't
worth it as a consequence),
- standard tactic works almost every time in RTS missions (the addon
is better in that regard),
- much backtracking (changed by the latest patch that adds more
portals),
- weak magic (wizard characters are playable, but in diffulty between
medium [Black Magic and Elemental] and extremely challeging [Mental
Magic], while melee characters are somewhere between moderately easy
and extremely easy),
- too many useless items,
- the last few missions are somewhat uninspired,
- resource hog.

I recommend to take up the first addon "Breath of Winter". The missions
are more varied and there is no standard tactic. The other flaws
persist, though. The music, BTW, is even more beautiful and the
storytelling of the main storyline is better, excepting the end. You
will also get a lot of play time for your money.

There's a second addon I haven't played yet.

In the (first) addon, the towers become available much later in the
campaign, so it isn't as much of a problem.

Warlords Battlecry and Warcraft 3 both did this before Spellforce.
