I have an old PC which I built a while back. Recently the secondary spinning disk has been randomly disconnecting whilst the PC is in use. The primary solid state disk has and continue to work perfectly.
Originally I chalked this up to a faulty hard disk, however, the disk works flawlessly when in a USB caddy. This ruled out the faulty disk theory.
I then tried replacing the SATA cable, power cable, and swapped around the SATA port on the motherboard. None of these steps resolved the issue. I thought that the motherboard may be at fault, however the fact that the primary disk continue to work absolutely fine makes me doubt that.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any alternative theories, or if anyone can point to a false assumption which does highlight that the disk or motherboard are indeed faulty.
