Split screen/dell vostro 1510 vista biz/loads in safe mode only

Help! Transitioned to a surface, need my laptop for the occasional desktop download and iTunes synch, but alas my dell has long ago turned split screen, occasional blue screen and will not load beyond safe mode profiles..

I have the Vista OS reinstillation DVD, Drivers & Utilities, Application discs and an OS Xp resinstallation CD.. I cannot boot the laptop from the OS DVD, only the discs in safe mode.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!
