Split screen in MechAssault 2?

I just rented this game and want to play a little death match with my kid.
So I went to "multiplayer" and it just shows players as 1/1. All joysticks
are connected and functioning but it won't let me add more players. I select
the local split screen multiplayer. Since this is a rental I have no
instruction book. Does multiplayer get unlocked or something?

I don't think so. I tried the demo of MechAssault 2 with split screen
and it worked for me.

Cheese and crackers, man, I didn't realize you have to "invite a guest" or
whatever even in local mode. Bleh

Yeah, I thought I had done something like that but I couldn't remember
at the time. I wasn't that impressed with the demo.
