Splitting optical output

Hello everyone. I recently got a decent, mid-budget 5.1 sound system
and digital receiver. However, due to the "budget" factor, it only has
so many inputs. It has 1 digital coax and 1 digital optical. Now I have
a DVD player, digital cable, Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube. I don't know
about PS2 or Gamecube, but I know you can get an optical out for the
Xbox...

The Question:

Similar to A/V switches, are there any OPTICAL switches out there that
I could hook up my Xbox and DVD player to the same optical input with
minimal loss of quality?

This is what I use but I'm not sure if it's more than what you need.
http://tinyurl.com/4pogo
It's a complete system selector/switcher, which supports three optical
digital inputs, three component inputs and eight S-video inputs.

For something very simple I know I once purchased a TOSLINK splitter at
RadioShack before. I couldn't find it at their web site just now but
they are available if you look around.

Regarding your other systems, the GC does not support digital audio,
but the PS2 does (altho not all games support it).

Thanks guys. Both options are very nice, though the Pelican is a might
bit expensive. Does it use a remote or is it a manual push button?

I also liked the splitter-cable suggestion. I understand what you meant
about making sure the other systems are off... but do you mean TRULY
off? PS2's go into their "standby" mode as does my DVD player. Will
this cause sound problems?

It's a push button system and comes with pre-labelled buttons with each
console's name on it.

If you are only looking for something to switch/split your digital
audio, then it's way more than what you need, but since you do own
multiple systems it could come in handy if you ever go component.

I think that would be ok, as there is no sound coming out of the PS2 at
that time.

Well I may just go with the splitter route. Where did you get yours?

I've check RadioShack, Best Buy, CompUSA, Underground Sound... NONE of
them carry ANY of this stuff.

ARGH!

PS2 supports optical out as well.

There are such beasts, and they are expensive.

Instead, do what I did when faced with trying to connect my PS2 and DVD
player to my decoder which only has 1 optical input. I got an optical
Y-splitter, which is designed to take a single signal and split it into
two. Three-way splitters were also also available. I think I paid all of
$2 for the splitter, and another $5 for a short optical cable.

Then, just use it backwards, like I am, to have multiple signals coming
into 1 wire, which is then plugged into the decoder. Optical signals are
pretty much loss-free. Either it works, or it doesn't. So don't worry
about buying high-end optical cables. It's not like you'll experience any
loss of signal (it's light, remember? ;) Just be sure to only have one
device on at a time, otherwise the signals will collide with each other,
producing an unpleasant sound...

Well, I just went the eBay route. I called RadioShack in my area...
said they had no such equipment. Ah well. I imagine I'm saving a lot
more going online than I would retail.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Really? I got mine at RadioShack. Otherwise you could get them from off
the internet.

As did I, it works great!

Standby is fine. Basically, there can be nothing else on the line but one
signal. Otherwise, the splitter (nay, "combiner") will mix the two
together and feed the resulting mess into your decoder. At least my
decoder is smart enough to know junk when it sees it rather than trying to
produce whatever ungodly noise the signal is telling it to.

I make mods for your Advanced AV pack - instead of optical, you can covert
the digital signal with a small hack to turn it into coax. I have done it
for myself and it's super easy.

Let me know if you want me to mod your AV pack.

For $100 at Best Buy, you can get the Pelican System Switcher.
I have one and it is amazing. It not only lets you share optical, but
component cables as well.
The only thing I wish it had was a remote.
