Just curious as to how vaults work in terms of treasure generation. I
must assume that it works by increasing the treasure chance and quality
of drops by the monsters therein and not by putting down specific
treasures (as in greater vault hidden rooms) because otherwise jellies
wouldn't be picking up those seven-league-boots. Can one of you gentle
codeheads tell me what's up with vaults, and how it's determined what
kind of treasure chance and quality increase is granted to the monsters
within the vault? Lessers and greaters, please.

I have often felt the same, but reasoned that it is simply
because you kill a lot of monsters very fast. Thus it
seems like there is more loot pr. monster, but in reality
there is merely more monsters.

In my time I must have had 20-30 RNG drop artifacts or so
(I can remember picking up). 2 from pickpocket (BoW,
Preserver), 3 from "Great Treasure" (BoW, obsidian shield,
shining spear), 3 from lesser vaults (robes, emerald
dagger, Preserver), 2 scumming in ToEF (ring of
immunities, obsidian shield) a few loose ones (e.g. had
scorched spear drop from a wilderness black dragon and BoW
drop from a summoned karmic dragon in the Air Temple) and
I reckon more than 15 scumming BDC. I personally don't
feel there is a trend for higher artifact generation in
lesser vaults.

None the less a more enlightened person may shed more
light on the matter.
