Spread Spectrum?

Okay, I see this thing in my bios many times and I haven't messed with them yet for I don't really know what it's for.

1. What is "Spread Spectrum" and what is it's porpuse?

2. Can this improve the performance of the pc?

I have done some overclocking many times but I haven't modify this one. My oc runs fine and stable, however I have read some reviews that it is best to disable this spread spectrum for it may increase performance.

There one for the cpu, pci-e and LDT which I don't know. What is LDT? So does turning off this sprectrum or changing it's settings would increase performance?

Sorry I haven't read you C2D guide yet, still using the 840 you know. Anyways I disabled the cpu spread spectrum but disable the pci and ldt spread spectrum made the overclock unstable so I just have the cpu spectrum disabled then and now it's running fine.
