I worked as a contractor for Sprint at their headquarters in KS last
year. One day we were smoking with Sprint people literally five feet
away from their building, and my Verison phone worked while their
sprint service was dead. Note: I do not work for Verizon, and could
not care less about any of them, I'm just giving and independent
account...
As far as ATT goes - it's the worst from any point of view -
coverage/price/customer service.

If I was on break, I might stand where my boss could not call me
either.

Yet I have an aunt and uncle that live in Overland Park, literally minutes from
Sprint HQ which is also in Overland Park, and last time we were there we had
no problems using my wife's Sprint phone.

On a related note, I have used my Sprint PCS phone tens of feet below
sea level with great success.

Under how much water? I notice other carriers dont have moisture sensors
in their phones.

How would a moisture sensor affect call quality?

Lowest point in USA: in Death Valley, California, 282 feet below sea level.

I used my Treo 300 from my Kayak in late 2002. Used a Verizon Audiovox
before that. I really need a new pelican case. :)

You don't even have to go all the way to Death Valley. As you drive
along I-10 east of Palm Springs, there is a nice sign at the top of a
gentle slope that says "Elevation: 0". The Salton Sea, just south of
the interstate, is almost as low as Death Valley, at -235 feet. It was
formed in the early 1900's when there was a break in one of the
aqueducts, letting loose an enormous volume of water from the Colorado
River. Due to its elevation, there was no way for the water to run off
anywhere, so it stayed as a large lake.

Incidentally, within Death Valley National Park, you can also go up to
an elevation of over 11,000 feet! As the crow flies, it's only about 16
miles from -282 to +11,094.

Cool. I didn't know that.

I did know that, though. But it's not 16 miles from -282 to +11094, it's
only about 2.2 miles (11376 feet).

Oh, wait, that's not what you meant. :)

Any chance some gobmnt agency would dig a canal from the Pcific?

A canal from the Pacific would have to go a long way to reach Death Valley.
Death Valley sits on the Nevada border.

So... No, probably not.
