So I was just given an old mostly unused SSD from a friend. I want it as my main drive but it's only 256GB and I need at LEAST 500GB. I have a 750GB hdd that is my main drive that I'd like to make my backup so I can use the ssd but I will not be able to fully install everything on my computer to the SSD (not even close).

Is there a way to be able to make a backup partition on the 750Gb hdd so that I can still use it for some of my active files that won't fit on the SSD BUT STILL BE ABLE TO DO A FULL HDD WIPE minus that small partition?

If not, then I would be forced to make the ssd as the backup which would be a waste

Solution
Is the ssd by any chance Samsung?
If so, they offer a free ssd migration app.
It has the option to exclude large files from the migration such as video and such that do not need the registry.
It is comes from CLONIX so you could probably buy the app too.

Keep the os on the 750gb drive to serve as an emergency backup.
Primarily for the apps, which are often a pain to reinstall on a clean windows install.
Your data files will still be accessible.
For data you value figure out a way to do backup to an EXTERNAL device.
