SSD as an external boot drive

So I want to experience SSD booting speeds without having to open up my Laptop. Since I already have an SSD, can I use it as a boot drive by installing it in a USB 3.0 adapter? If so, would the speeds differ a lot? Thanks!

No it will need to be on the SATA controller.
