the intel ports on the mb are slower sata ports. there are two 6g sata ports but they use Marvell 9128 chip:

2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (GSATA3_6, GSATA3_7) supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, and RAID 1

your better off leaving the system as it is till the mb or cpu dies and then rebuild with a intel chipset that will do sata 6g. if not you can try a 3 party sata controler pci card they run you 30-100 online.
ssd speed comes from the chipset and sata port used. you need a newer intel z77 or newer chipset for max speed. the amd chipset 900 line may or may not give you full sata speed with an ssd. if you have an intel chipset make sure your on the sata 6g port. and are using a 6g cable. make sure the mb bios and chipset drivers are up to date and the mb sata port set to achi mode.

There's no such thing as "6g cable" but SATA rating can make difference.
For SATA ports, being SATA2 or SATA 3 is important to be set in AHCI mode otherwise speed will deteriorate with time.
On AMD systems you may expect only a bit lower speed than on Intel platform.
Now:
Which MB ?
Which SSD ?
Which OS ?
Those are crucial questions without which even guessing is not close to reality.
