I have a system based on GA-P55-USB3 with classic HDD (bought ca.: 2011). As I recently started using video editing applications it turned out that the physical drive will have to be replaced with SDD. My friend tells me that I have to buy a new MB in order to use the SSD, as there is no M.2 port on my MB. I have just read however that there are PCI Express ports on my current MB that can be used as well.
On the Gigabyte site I see the following specification of my MB:

  • 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16) (Note 2) (The PCIEX16 slot conforms to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)
    1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4_X1) (Note 3)
    2 x PCI Express x1 slots
    3 x PCI slots
What is your opinion? Should I just buy a new MB or maybe there is a drive that you could suggest to buy and connect? How about the bios and chipset? I consider connecting it to the 1st or the 2nd port from the list above.

Thank you for your kind reply. I just want to avoid SATA due to its low performance (low speed). I still assume that it could work on PCI Express ver. 2.0. specification speeds (up to 8GB/s). Couldn't it?

yes but aren't you using a graphics card on that slot ? i don't know the specifics but you can refer to your user manual for the speed of your pice lanes and their limitations . my off the counter guess will be that a sata ssd workd just as good as an m.2 on your motherboard given a 6 gb/s cable .
