Intel Core i5 7600K @ 3.80GHz Kabylake 14nm
RAM 16.0GB DDR4 @ 1069MHz (15-15-15-36)
Motherboard ASUSTeK PRIME Z270-P (LGA1151)
Graphics 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
Storage currently…
223GB KINGSTON SATA SSD (currently W10 OS = installed)
931GB Western Digital WDC internal HDD (SATA = backup for picture and video files)
1863GB Seagate ST2000DM006 internal (SATA) = used as E: for program and software files.
1862GB Western Digital WD Elements 107C USB Device (USB (SATA) ) external used for original full then incremental backups.
Storage – New …
Samsung NVMe SSD 960 EVO M.2 500GB
Seagate Barracuda 4Tb SATA - 256mb cache x 4 units (new unfitted)
I want to ditch Windows 10, and I have a proper copy of Windows 7 Pro 64 – with key, as a DVD iso (bootable)
My plan is to physically remove the existing drives, install the M.2 card and clean install Windows 7 onto it. Then use the new 4TB drives x 4 to create a 1+0 RAID, for redundancy and possibly a slight performance increase.
Yes – I know I ‘lose’ 8TB – but I think the remaining 8 will last me for a while yet, and I like the peace of mind that I can lose a disk with not too much hardship to replace it.
I have the existing 2TB external for backup, and would also like to use an external caddy to use the old internal 2 TB drive for backup of the backup if that makes sense.
Is this possible with my motherboard and system as it stands? As far as I can tell I have 4 x SATA slots, and 2 M.2 sockets.
Would my optical drive be using one of the SATA sockets – so stopping me from using one of the new drives?
If this is all do-able – what would the procedure be?
I know the backup everything – find the W7 drivers for the mobo part and that side of things – I have that on a usb drive already.
Should I go into the BIOS and set anything to do with RAID before taking my pc apart?
Should I Install all the drives – SSD and 4 x HDD before installing W7?
Should I give up and formulate another plan as my plan wont work?
All advice welcome !
