So, I just recently bought a Samsung SSD and I can't clone my windows install onto it. And I can't clean install windows onto it, because it isn't formatted. It only gives me 2 formatting options through windows, exFat and NTSF, what should I do?

Solution
Hey there, Chris.

Basically a cloning tool shouldn't require you to format the hard drive as it clones the exact same partition from the source drive along with its file system (NTFS, exFAT, FAT32, etc.) and all the data. If you do need to format the drive - go with NTFS. It's a lot more stable file system than exFAT.
You should have the option to create partition and format them during the Windows installation as well. Check out this tutorial - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52291-partition-hard-drive-windows-7-install.html. It's for Windows 7 since I don't know what's your version of the OS, but things are basically the same for the newer ones as well.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes.

Hey there, sumusiko.

What did you mean by "trim your SSD every few weeks". Trim is an OS function which is either enabled or disabled. When enabled it does everything automatically - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim_%28computing%29 and you are right that it should be enabled for an SSD. It helps the device to run at its optimal performance throughout its entire life.

You and Chris can both take a look at this article for more useful tips regarding SSDs - https://www.maketecheasier.com/12-things-you-must-do-when-running-a-solid-state-drive-in-windows-7/

Cheers!
