SSD + HDD combo slows down boot time

Hey so basically i've got Windows 8 running on my Samsun 840 SSD and I have a secondary 1TB HDD plugged in too. The problem is that when both drives are plugged in the boot time just on the windows logo takes around 15 seconds. If I unplug the 1TB HDD the boot time is so fast I can barely see the Windows logo appear and disappear. What is going on here? I have seen others with setups that feature multiple drives and they can get from powering up to destop in 15 seconds. The 1TB HDD is currently formatted and empty.

It is hard to say what may actually be behind your issue, without having the unit in front of me and examining the data logs. I'd suggest going into the BIOS and selecting the Performance setting (as an example, one setting is typically Optimal Settings). I don't mean speed up your PC CPU or anything like that, but its more a reference to how the BIOS works with the operating system. Once you have done that go and manually select the boot up sequence. Most BIOS's continue to get this wrong in AUTO select mode. So taking a little control should help.

I also remember reading about a HDD that took longer than normal to spin up to operational speed, the polling of the SATA drive caused the PC / OS to wait until it was ready for the HDD to function, which of course means the program could not move onto the next phase of the boot up sequence, slowing it down. So perhaps if the issue persists change out the 1Tb drive with another to see if this is the fault.

I believe I fixed it. I went into BIOS and then found the Harddrive Boot settings, the first one was SSD and second one was the 1TB. I disabled the boot completely on the 1TB harddrive and it seems to have worked. I think for some reason my system was trying to read a boot off my SSD and my Harddrive. Thanks for the help though!
