Hello,
Having an inexpensive HP 15-bw011dx that I couldn't disassemble without without breaking anything. I decided to use an HDD/SSD caddy to install an "old" Samsung 840 Pro 256 Gb.
The hardware installation went without a hitch, the SSD mounted perfectly into the caddy (Highfine Universal 9.5mm SATA to SATA 2nd SSD HDD Hard Drive Caddy Adapter Tray Enclosures for DELL HP LENOVO ThinkPad ACER Gateway ASUS SONY SAMSUNG MSI Laptop).
I used the Samsung data migration software, that I have already used multiple times on my desktop to migrate Windows from an HDD to an SSD which worked fine.

On my laptop however, something is not right:
Windows migrated from the HDD to the SSD on the caddy. The SSD showed in device manager and in BIOS. But when I tried to boot from it, even though BIOS showed both HDD and SSD, it did not allow me to select the SSD as the boot drive!

My SSD is E: and my HDD remains C:

I tried disk management to change letters, but C: doesn't want to change.

Any ideas?

Try unplugging the the HDD.
Cable the ssd to the original HDD port.

That's the whole problem, as stated in my original post, disassembling the laptop hasn't worked for me. Tried to open it, but did not want to open easily so I didn't want to force it and break anything!

Windows 10, as a security measure wants to boot or reboot from the device it was installed on.
It normally does not truly shut down to make booting faster and to wake up to do updates.
Before you shut down, hold down the shift key while pressing the power down tab.
This should force a true power off.
Can you accomplish the same thing by removing the battery?

If you press F12 while powering up, do you get a boot device selection menu?

This is off-topic but do you have a idea of how much electricity that uses overnight or the course of a month

Yes, BIOS shows both the original HDD and the new SSD in the boot menu. I can highlight either of them, but it just doesn't allow me to select the one I want. What I mean is, I highlight the SSD with the UP-DWON arrows, then press ENTER on my keyboard and nothing happens. The BIOS just does "save" the selection even though I select "save and exit"!

I'm off to work this AM, but I'll definitely going to try the shut down trick you mentioned.

Update:
I was able to open the darn laptop! there were screws hidden under the bottom pads...go figure.
I swapped the old HDD with the SSD and everything worked perfectly.

excellent, that was going to be my suggestion to fix it, i have a very similar hp notebook... lol it was useless without the ssd and an 8GB upgrade.
