SSD / HDD keeps disconnecting

Here is the bottom line as of 6/3/16: I updated the BIOS and thought that fixed the problem but it did not and dropped the HDD drive again. After reading up on the manual a little more realized that when using a M2 it takes up 4 PCI lanes - which is 4 of my SATA connection ports. I could only use 3,4 10 GB second and 6,7 for powering devices and I think slower 6 GB second traffic (I still am not 100% sure of the difference) anyway....I switched a disc drive and my HDD SATA around and now my HDD has not disconnected in days but my disc drive does not work. So long story short I believe my #7 SATA port is bad. I don't know how common it is for a single port to go bad, but that is what I have narrowed it down to. This Gigabyte board is less than 1 year old and overall I really am not happy with the board or their software, I wish I would have gotten an ASUS Maximus Board like my last one.

Within about an hour or so after computer is turned on, I will hear a ding and I go check my PC file and one of my drives is missing, first it was my Samsung SSD now it tends to be my HDD. If I restart the computer the drive comes back. I tried changing the cables around and checking power connections but did not fix. My next step is to do a motherboard bios and Sata driver update. Could these updates be the culprit?

Hi there Piecefighter,

My suggestion would be to go to your MOBO's website and update the SATA drivers. Yeah, it could be caused by that.

Apart from that, you can try something simple as just attaching those drives to different ports.
Also, it will not hurt to test the SSD with it's maker tool. You can test your WD drive with WD's DLG tool. Run both short and extended DLG tests: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=IOHTGm
If there is something wrong with those, you need to back up the data.

Let us know how this goes,

I would suggest you to go to power settings of your pc and change it to High Performance mode. you can do this by locating "Change Plan Settings" next to Balanced Mode which you will find in power options. Then go to "Change advanced power settings". Set mode to High performance and check down the "Hard disk" option, the will be "Turn of hard disk after" and set it to Never (0 minutes). Good luck 😉

Yes, I know, but once I had problem like this. I tried different sata cables, different ports on mobo, but no luck, hdd was working, it had sound but it wasn't appearing in Drives section. So I thought that checking option that I suggested would be helpful. If it's just going silent and no signs of working even when you touch it, I think there I a power problem or an update as you suggested :)

I was able to update my BIOS and check all my power settings, they were on max power already. I could not find any other drives that were out of date with the motherboard other than the BIOS. I will let you know if updating the BIOS fixed my drives disconnecting. Just need to be on the computer for a few hours.

OK after updating the BIOS on the board my drives have stopped disconnecting. You know the biggest irritant here is the fact that gigabyte does not offer a program that works to do this without having to manually reset my CMOS to access the BIOS.
