SSD+HDD System, Won't auto-boot (However, will manually boot?)

Hi all,

I have an SSD and a HDD set up right now and I want it to boot automatically from the SSD. Originally I just had the HDD and then I went through the process of setting up the SSD to run along with it. However, it will not boot automatically for some reason. I've tried to go into the BIOS and make it first priority, but it doesn't seem to recognize it. For example, when I set it as first in the boot order and restart, it will act as if there is nothing to boot from.

The confusing part is, I can manually choose to boot from the SSD and it will do it (I've been doing it this way for months but I'd like to fix the problem permanently so I don't have to rapidly click "f11" everytime I reboot. Any suggestions? I'm not sure what other specs might be useful for helping solve this problem, so for now I'll just say I'm using Windows 10.

Thanks!

Welcome to the TH community, John!

I'm guessing you had both the HDD and the SSD plugged to your motherboard at the time of the Windows installation, is that so? Whenever you are setting up a new booting storage drive, you should always unplug the other SATA devices from the mobo. I'm afraid you are encountering an OS confusion that might require you to start from scratch with the SSD OS installation. (Make sure you disconnect the HDD from the motherboard while doing it)
Even though this guide is for Win 8/8.1, you should still check out the steps about Optimizing your system: http://www.overclock.net/t/1240779/seans-windows-8-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds

Just make sure you have the data from the HDD backed up somewhere...

Just make sure you have the data from the HDD backed up somewhere else, since the drive was previously used for booting, you'd need to re-format it once you have the OS up and running on the SSD.

Good luck! Hope this helps you! :)
