SSD in a Latitude E7440

I have a Latitude E7440. I'm trying to install an SSD in it, but it's fighting tooth and nail.

If I install a standard HDD, the drive is detected and shows up in the BIOS. The PC will boot.

If I install an SSD, the system cannot detect the boot device. I have tried two different SSD's, both were different brands.

I can put the SSD in and boot into our imaging program, image the drive, no problems.

The software can see the drive is there. It writes to it without issue.

As soon as I try to boot, I get "No bootable media detected".

Has anyone else had an issue like this or maybe some suggestions I can try?

As I mentioned, I have updated the BIOS, I have updated the firmware on the SSD's. It's set to run in AHCI. Legacy boot rom. No security feature are enabled.

Thank you in advance for anything you have to suggest.

Which operating system have you installed on SSD?Also after you plug-in your SSD the Boot Order via BIOS is set correctly or not? That might be the problem because sometimes if you haven't the set the order correctly in first priority then you can't boot.

It is a generalized image of Windows 8.

The boot order remains unchanged with the installation of the SSD.

Both SSD's I have tried don't show up in the system properties in the BIOS. Dell onboard diagnostics indicate that there is no drive installed.

Both SSD's are good. They both work. I stuck one into an older Latitude 6400 and it booted into Windows 8 without issue.

As soon as I stuck it back in the 7440, no go.

If I switch the 7440 back to the old spinning disk, it fires right up.

Which SSD is yours? (Brand)

Check out the official forum of DELL as mentioned above, hope it helps.. :)

Cheers!

Secure and fast boot are disabled. I tried with both on, both off, and a combination of the two.

Human Being, I read through that dell thread, but I didn't see anything that stood out for what my problem is. I could try another cable, but I'm not confident that that will be the resolution here. Thank you for pulling that up to read through. It was interesting none-the-less.

It's just very odd. I have two normal HDD's that show up fine. I have two SSD's and one normal HDD that do not show up at all in BIOS. If I get it to an OS(or PE), the drives are recognized.

All drives that have been used are tested and known-good.

I appreciate all of the suggestions so far. Thank you for taking a look at this with me.

Hi, I have same (or something like your) problem with my E7440. To try if everything is ok for upgrade, first I put a Kingston HyperX Savage 480Gb. It worked well, but it wasn't mine .. so I thought I can buy any SSD on the market. I documented and I think so the new Samsung 850 PRO and EVO are the best SSD-t at the moment.
I tried Samsung 850 Pro 256Gb and Samsung 850 Evo 250Gb. None of them worked!!! I tried Kingston V300 240Gb which wasn't detected by the BIOS! Curently I'm using a Samsung PM851 256Gb(mSata) and I'm thinking to try a Samsung Evo 840 or a Crucial MX200. Maybe one of these will work..

Switch it from GPT to MBR or MBR to GPT after nuking the partition(s) in Disk Management and see if you can get it installed that way, with it being the only hard drive connected to the motherboard. If BIOS is not detect SSD that following are reasons for it:
Drivers are not enabled in BIOS. Serial ATA drivers are not properly installed.
Faulty or unplug data cable.
