SSD Installation process for new Acer Aspire V5 ?

Hi everyone,

This forum has always been extremely helpful to me and therefore I continue to ask for help when needed; despite the fact it makes me look n00bish I know I can always get professional-level help from the braintrusts here.

Anyway I have a new laptop, an Acer Aspire V5-552PG-X469 that is less than 3 weeks old. I am going to take the steps to upgrade it to it's maximum potential which I have been told is adding a Solid State Drive and maximizing the ram to 12GB.

In case of the ram, it's simple. It has 8GB factory RAM but apparently 4GB are soldered to the board or something like that, and it has one bay with a 4GB dimm. I can replace it with an 8GB chip to make 12GB total. Simple enough.

I also plan on adding a Samsung 840 PRO 256GB SSD... but I am very unsure of the process. I am told by someone else they looked it up and the drive is compatible... but I am worried I will need an "installation kit" and "adapter cord" ... when you look at BestBuy (which is NOT where I am buying from) they say you need to buy their kit. do I in fact need more?

Also if anyone could help me with the actual entire process. My plAN IS to remove the 1TB WD HDD from inside, put in the 256GB SSD, use the 1TB WD HDD as an external drive for storage, and put my Windows and stuff like that on the SSD. I was reading that cloning a drive is the easiest but I can't do that because the SSD drive needs to be bigger than the drive-to-be-cloned. So I am worried about how I'll get my data onto the SSD

It will be as easy as removing the 1tb hdd and popping the SSD in, then all you have to do is install windows. Do not and I repeat clone or image onto an ssd you will get significantly reduced speed. Every manufacturer recommends a clean install of the OS onto an SSD.

You will literally see no performance difference from upgrading to 12gb from 8gb besides synthetic benchmarks so save your money. Also I would rather prefer getting a Samsung 840 Evo instead of the PRO because of various reasons (google for more info)

The best way is to back-up your important files, photos and documents to an external drive. You do have your system backed up, don't you?

The best method to get Windows on the new SSD is to do a "clean install" from scratch and reinstall any programs that you want to be on your SSD.

Alternatively, you could delete and uninstall enough files and programs from the old HDD in order to get the size of the remaining files + Windows down to a size that will fit on the SSD and then clone the remaining files + Windows to the SSD. If your laptop only has one drive bay you'll need that USB adapter + cable to get your data onto the SSD. I used Samsung's Data Migration tool and it worked very well after I updated to the latest version.

Roxas thank you very much, very helpful. What I am a little concerned about is that I do not have an optical drive (CD/DVD etc) on this because it's an Ultra Thin so I am worried how I will get Windows onto it as a clean install if I don't do the clone.

Yogi I have not backed this up yet because, it is 3 weeks old, I actually have several old-computers-hard-drives I want to (eventually) migrate their data onto this (regular 1TB western digital) HDD... I just thought I should be figuring out the SSD install first before .


One other thing, I will try to do some Googling but I thought I had read elsewhere I definitely wanted the 840 Pro over the 840 Evo (I thought i read it was newer technology and would last 50+ years) but please let me know if I am wrong here, the 840 Evo is less money than the Pro.

Here is a legit site to download legitimate copies of Windows 7 ISO, just download the ISO you want (defininitely 64-bit version) http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/

Bro i am buying samsung 850 evo,it comes with samsung own cloning image software should i clone my c drive into it? i am using windows 10 i dont wanna re install a lot of update files will be installed again and i am on limited internet network. So its my confirmation question that really is there any need of re installation of windows on ssd apart from cloning
