SSD not bootable Windows 10

Dear all

Recently I bought a Samsung 850 EVO SSD M.2 250GB in addition to the 1TB 7200rpm HDD that's already in my MSI GP72 2QD notebook. I fully, and succesfully, cloned the software from my HDD (including Windows 10) to the SSD, using the application Samsung provided on their website. Then I had to make my computer switch boot settings, so that it would boot from the new SSD, but this is where I got stuck. I acces the BIOS/UEFI settings (number E1793IMS.10E, should that mean anything to you) and go to my boot settings. In there, I tried to add my SSD to the priority list, but, as you can see on this screenshot, it wasn't in the list.

Then I checked out the UEFI Hard Disk Drive BBS Priority list, below that list. In there, there was another priority list, as seen in the next screenshot:

In here, I could select the SSD! And indeed, when I changed this order, the SSD showed up in the first priority list (first screenshot), as a replacement for the HDD. So all seemed fine. However, when I saved and rebooted the computer, it didn't. When I got to my desktop, it started to flash. It showed the Dragon Gaming Center error (something for MSI notebooks, I suppose), then it blackscreened, than the error again, blackscreen again,...

So this didn't seem right. I've been looking for a solution for quite a while now, but haven't found any. A lot of similar problems talked about wirings with SATA and stuff, but that doesn't really apply to this case, since my SSD's has a M.2 form factor. I read about switching boot mode from UEFI to LEGACY, as seen in the screenshot below,
ubFIaxN.jpg

but that caused my computer to flash as well, it didn't even manage to boot, it just kept showing this:

I also tried to disable the safe boot mode (as I have read somewhere) and tried the same things mentioned above, but without result.

Desperate is I am, I hereby throw my question in the community, hoping for some help!

Thanks in advance!

I personally have used Acronis True Image WD Edition when cloning, Michiel. However, I'd strongly recommend you to consider clean installing Windows onto the SSD, as it's probably the best resolution. The fresh OS will require you to re-install all your software apps as well, but at least, you know there won't be any redundant system files filling up your solid-state drive.

Welcome to the TH community, Michiel!

This seems unfortunate. I'd recommend you repeat the cloning procedure on the SSD using a different cloning software even. Hopefully, that will make it successful. Another thing you could try is resetting BIOS . This will set all your BIOS settings back to factory defaults, so you would need to reconfigure them. I'd also recommend you check your SATA mode for the SSD and make sure it's set to AHCI.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

Thanks a lot for your quick response! What cloning software do you recommend? I'm not very familiar with this stuff, so I wouldn't know if I can use the shadow copy or the easeUS software (mentioned in your link) to clone my stuff.
Also, I'd like to know how idiot proof such a BIOS reset is.

Thanks again!

The BIOS reset will simply get your settings back to their factory defaults, which means that you will probably just need to reconfigure the SATA mode for the SSD to AHCI and set the boot priority properly. No harmful influence on your system, really. Just read through the instructions in the link from my previous post, you will find 3 different step-by-steps on how to perform the reset.

Let me know if you have more questions!
