SSD not booting as primary drive; System still recognizes old boot files

Hello,
I cloned my HDD (Windows 8.1-was downloaded from university website) onto a new SSD for use as my master drive, and after formatting, my HDD would become my slave backup drive. The clone did not work-I kept getting “Error code: 0xc0000225” and needed to repair my computer. What I did instead was a clean install of Windows 7(from my old build) onto my SSD. I have 2 problems: 1) I cannot boot with my SSD as primary drive set in BIOS, but can with HDD (which has been re-formatted) set as primary drive. 2) I think that my computer is still recognizing some old Windows 8.1 boot files as I have to select if I want to boot Windows 7 or 8.1 upon prompt (if I choose 8.1 it does not boot). Thank you for your help!

Thank you to you both:
@rgd1101-no I did not-could that be why it is recognizing 8.1 boot files (perhaps in the system reserve?)
@RFM1997-I have seen this as a possible solution on other forums, and will try doing this later today.
