SSD not detected in Bios. Please help!

Hi,

I am in a very strange situation. Recently, while I was on my computer and trying to load BF4, my computer suddenly crashed, and ever since then, I cannot use my ssd as boot drive.
What is happening is that Bios is NOT detecting my ssd as a boot option ever since that crash, even though it shows up in file explorer, disk management, and diskpart. But even more interestingly, when I go to "board explorer" on my MSI gaming 5 motherboard, it shows that one of the sata ports is occupied by the SSD. But as I said, it still does not show up as a boot option.
Also, I am fully capable of accessing all my files on the ssd through file explorer. I can view any documents or pictures, I can transfer files etc. I even tried cloning it to my other hard drive which booted up perfectly. I have also erased all data on the drive after backing it up and formatted it as an NTFS drive, but bios is still not detecting it.

I have also tried plugging it into different ports on different computers, but nothing worked.

My ssd is 1.5 years old and is a Crucial M4 SSD 128gb. It is a refurbished item, but it was only sent back to the manufacturer because of firmware, which had to be reloaded.

So it seems like it is working and fully functional, but for some reason, it shows up everywhere except the bios boot options.

Any help is appreciated.

have you tried resetting BIOS to all defaults and see if it is detected?

you could try just deleting all partitions on it and leave it raw. then plug it in and run Windows install media to see if the Windows installer recognizes the raw drive.
make sure all other drives are disconnected before attempting.

Go into the bios of the motherboard make sure CSM mode is enabled.
Set the detection to Legacy op rom \ Uefi mode.

Enable detection of legacy devices if it exists as an option in your bios settings.


Go to your booting options, or boot order list of devices to set.
The first list you see should have up to six devices for selection that you can set in a booting order.

Scroll down the page and you will see another two options for selecting boot devices.

Click on number 1 and you should see the ssd drive listed there select it.

Save the changes you made in the bios before you exit it.

it a know firmware bug. i would call the vendor and get another brand of there ssd as a replacement.

Thanks for the help.
It turns out it was quite a simple problem. For my motherboard there is a hard drive boot priority section among other special sections for usbs, cd drives etc and within there I found my ssd. The problem was that it somehow got changed to 2nd, and only the 1st hard drive showed up in the general list of boot options. So you can alternate between hard drives which show up in the boot order list.
