SSD not powering up/recognized using SATA to USB cable

Hi community!

I've got a 2.5" SSD which I'm trying to pull data from. It's normally an internal drive which was removed from a laptop. I've tried using a regular SATA to USB cable, which I know works as I've used it with regular spinning HDDs in the past. However, when connecting the SSD, nothing happens. The adapter is found, but not the drive.

Now, I noticed that the SSD is rated for 5v and 1.6A. This amperage seems like it's more than could be provided by a USB port. Could the drive not receiving enough juice be the answer to my problem?

Thanks!

I would have thought a USB 3 port would provide enough power too, but for whatever reason it won't work with the SSD.

I don't have a desktop computer around to test it on at the moment, so I'm restricted to a couple of laptops.

I don't have a double ended USB connector, however I might have a powered USB hub flying around somewhere. Do you think it might be worth trying?

So I tried connecting the SSD to a powered USB hub. Unfortunately, it exhibits the same behavior as when connected to the USB port directly.

Could this still be a power issue? The hub provides 1200 mA. Or does this mean the drive is probably dead?

After having tried a SATA to USB connector with a Y on the USB end and nothing being recognized, I think I'll just have to write off the drive. I might try connecting it internally after the SATA cable gets fixed, but I won't be holding my breath...
