SSD options w/ ASUS Maximus VII Formula

I'm looking to get an SSD for my M7F, and as near as I can tell I have four options:

  • ■ SATA 3
    ■ SATA Express (both an Asmedia port and an Intel port, not sure which one is better)
    ■ 2260 or smaller M.2 SSD - there's not enough room for a 2280
    ■ PCIe
I'd really like to use the M.2 slot but it seems that there almost no drives in a 2260 size or smaller. I'm also not caught up on the difference between that and SATA Express, which as near as I can tell is another PCIe based standard but with less (no?) drives available. There's also the Asus Hyper Express enclosure available, for which I'd have to purchase two M.2 drives. It would take a 3.5" slot (which isn't an issue) but I don't know if it would be any faster.

Considering that I'm not on Haswell-E, I'm slightly concerned about PCIe lanes if I were to use one of the PCIe solutions; I've got a dual Crossfire setup already and I don't want to trade HD speed for GPU performance.

Primary concern is reliability. I'd like a 250/256GB drive. Budget is pretty much anything less than $200.

I would stick with Sata 3 SSD.

I can't find the Hyper Express for sale anywhere; it does look cool.
And unfortunately I don't think I can use almost any M.2 drives due to my motherboard not having room for 2280 size drives. I see that there are M.2 extension cables available, does this sound like a good idea?

I would stick with Sata 3 SSD.
