My HDD just failed, and I'm already shopping for a replacement. A few friends have suggested buying a SSD (Solid State Drive) to install my OS on, and then just carry an external HDD around with me for my bigger files like movies, music, pictures ect.

Should I do this, or should I just buy a new HDD? I'm leaning towards the SSD, but I would like some suggestions before I buy anything.

FWIW.
I will never again build without a ssd for the "C" drive. It makes everything you do much quicker.
120gb is minimum, it will hold the os and a handful of games. If you can go 240gb, you may never need a hard drive.

I would defer on the hard drive unless you need to store large files such as video's.
Samsung EVO is a good choice.

Well I love my SSD I would never want to go back after experiencing it. My pc boots in 10 seconds, all my apps are very responsive an open quickly, and my load times were cut in half in some games. So in my opinion it is worth it for most pc users if you spend a lot of time on your computer. And they are much cheaper than they used to be.

You should definetly go for the SSD+HDD combo.
You will experience significantly quicker boot times, faster program loading and faster writing speeds. In your day to day use, the SSD will bring faster overall performance and you should go for it.

SSD no question. The only reason my PC still has an HDD in it is simply size, for backups.
4 x SSD + 1 x HDD.

My wife's PC is a single SSD. 250GB 850 EVO.
My HTPC/house server is 1 SSD (OS and applications), and multiple HDD's for movie/music/backups/etc.

The current sweet spot for price vs size is a 250GB SSD.

I would honestly suggest an SSD, due to he fact it's faster than a hard drive
You can get a seagate SSD 256GB and you should
Have no problem since your system wil boot much faster
Than an ordinary hard drive and will perform multiple
Programs easily.
