MB ROG STRIX B360-F Gaming
16GB RAM
AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT
Core i5 8600
Windows 10 64 bit

I'm looking into getting an SSD for my main drive and was wondering what would work on this MB? I don't know if it holds true now but I also heard that windows 10 might have a problem with transferring from the old drive to the new one. Thanks

Solution
If you've not used an SSD before, it will be an eye opener.

You can use any PCIe 3.0 or SATA III SSD.

PCIe 3.0 examples, M.2 form factor:
Samsung 970 EVO
WD Black SN750
WD Blue SN550
Crucial P2

SATA III, either M.2 or 2.5" form factor:
Samsung 860 EVO
Crucial MX500

What do you use this system for?
How much space do you need?
What is the budget for this?

Transferring from the old drive to the new can be done, given certain size/space conditions.

Yeah I know it will be faster and boot faster. I play some PC games but not a fanatic, mostly graphics stuff, photos and editing. I was looking at the 860 EVO and I would need at least a 1 TB because I have that now. Now that I took early retirement my budget is a little better but I wouldn't want to go any more than 400.00

1TB 860 EVO (SATA III) is ~$110

1TB 970 EVO (NVMe) is ~ $170

How much space is consumed on your current drive?
If under 800GB, we can walk through the stepes to migrate everything over. Relatively easy.

-----------------------------
Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
If you are cloning from a SATA drive to PCIe/NVMe, install the relevant driver for this new NVMe/PCIe drive.
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive

(ignore this section if using the Samsung tool)
If you are going from a smaller drive to a larger, by default, the target partition size will be the same as the Source. You probably don't want that
You can manipulate the size of the partitions on the target (larger)drive
Click on "Cloned Partition Properties", and you can specifiy the resulting partition size, to even include the whole thing
(end ignore)

Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe all partitions on it.
This will probably require the commandline diskpart function, and the clean command.

Ask questions if anything is unclear.

I have a 929GB with 615GB free. I was wondering since I backup my drive with EaseUS can I just install the ssd and run the bootup of the backup disc?

No, that probably won't work. No idea of how that 'backup' was created.
See the steps above, do those.
I'll have to talk to hubby and tell him I need a new hard drive yesterday and today I had to repair it, don't know what's going on with it. It's pretty old so it's time for something newer. I will get the 970.......I copied the steps you posted above, thanks for your help.

If the current OS drive is having issues, clone/migration may not be the way forward.
You may just be transferring problems from old to new.

So then what?
A fresh OS install on the new drive.
Along with your applications, and everything else.

Get ready for this eventuality....copy all your personal files off to some other device.
Create a Win 10 USB to install with.
