I am trying to install the samsung eve 860 ssd, and the sad has slots for a big sata cable which I have, and a spot for a small data cable which my power supply didn't come with. Do I need to plug into both parts of the ssd?

Solution

The larger one is power, off the PSU.
The smaller connection is data, that gets connected to the motherboard.

You need both.

If you want the SSD to power up and function, it needs to be connected. What make and model of power supply do you have? Note that sata power cables usually have 2 to 3 connectors along it's length. You can plug in multiple devices into this one sata power cable. For instance, look at the sata power cable attached to your HDD. There's probably another connector on the cable to connect to the SSD (as long as it reaches).

Does it matter which sata port I plug into on the motherboard? Like ram matters which ones you put it in
