Yesterday I installed the samsung 840 into my laptop which is about 2-3 years old. It did not fit very well because of how thin it is so I put a little piece of cardboard under it to lift it up just enough to be able to slide in perfectly. Is this a bad idea?

What you need is "Polyethylene Foam" to be on the safer side. I don't think Card Board is ideal for what you are trying to do.

You can always find used "Polyethylene Foam" from other appliances or or buy if you need to.

Laptops are quite delicate but lots of people don't realize until things start going wrong. If you don't really care about the Laptop or what you use it for, then you are free to use whatever you want to hold the SSD.

My advice..... Do the right thing ! Good Luck

Heat is a big issue in a laptop. you can even buy special powered coolers, that the laptop sits on, that provide more airflow for cooling to the laptop.

The SSD might not create heat, but the insulator would prevent anything that does create heat from getting the proper cooling.
