I am replacing the SSD drive in my Dell Alienware m17 R4 laptop due to boot drive failing. Dell recommends the following drive:

M.2 PCIe NVME Gen 3x4 Class 40 2280 Solid State Drive - 512GB
When I put those specs into Amazon the following came up:

WD_BLACK 1TB SN850X NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280, Up to 7,300 MB/s - WDS100T2X0E

Will the WD SSD drive work or do I need to buy from Dell? Any help would be appreciated.

specs from that link pasted below.

Not clear to me which of the following you have. That model Alienware may have 1, 2, or 3 drives per below.

Your specific laptop may take M.2 drive or drives of 30 mm length or 80 mm length.

The WD SN850X is 80 mm length. You CAN'T use it if your laptop requires 30 mm length M.2 drives.

You need to confirm length you need one way or the other.

You DON'T need to buy from Dell.

The SN850X is relatively expensive. You can get nearly the same performance for less money.....other WD drives, Crucial drives; Samsung drives, etc

Your Alienware m17 R4 supports one of the following storage configurations:
  • One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive
  • Two M.2 2230 solid-state drives
  • Two M.2 2280 solid-state drives
  • One M.2 2230 solid-state drive and two M.2 2280 solid-state drives
The primary drive of your Alienware m17 R4 varies with the storage configuration. For computers with two M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drives, the primary drive is the designated M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive
