I have an oldish Samsung SSD, 470 series. It is right now installed in my I-Built-It PC alongside a ScanDisk SSd. The Samsung appears in the BIOS and its Properies in Disk Manage say that it's working properly. BUT when I try to allocate it, the message "not initialized" appears and it fails to allocate. OK, maybe this is a hardware fault, it isn't new, but how can I check it/fix it/use it??

Hey there, geofcrr.

Have you tried initializing the drive in order to be able to use it? If "yes" do you get any error messages? If "no", I'd recommend that you follow this tutorial in order to initialize ti: How to initialize or write a signature to a secondary hard drive or Solid State drive in Windows and after that go ahead and partition and format it as you like: How to partition and format a hard drive on Windows and Mac OSX

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Oops sorry I missed that step. When I open up Disk Manager it tells me that my Disk 1 (the problem drive) is not initialized. Then when I try to initialize it I get the message "The request could not be performed because of an IO device error". I can't help the feeling that if the BIOs recognizes the drive then so should Windows but if the simple answer is that the drive is dead it would be nice to have some more detailed information.

By the way, your links go to Western Digital support so the instructions include WD only stuff which is not relevant to my Samsung drive.
As I said my problem is how to interpret the mixed messages that W10 gives me. Either the drive is faulty as shown when I try to initialize it or it's not faulty like the Properties window says. Wish I knew which.

Unfortunately it does sound like the drive has some errors. I'd suggest that you try it with a different computer or at least a different SATA port and cables on yours and try initializing it again, to see if the same thing happens.
As for the links, yes, they are indeed from WD's website, but initializing, partitioning and formatting is the same for all drives, regardless of their brand (the process is OS related and not drive related). I just used the links as tutorials on how to do those things in order for you to have visual guides. :)
