SSD won't work in a caddy

I have a 3.5 caddy fitted to my Ausus Z87 Deluxe. It works fine with a 3.5 HD installed but if I try to use a 2.5 adapter and Evo 840 ot Kingston V300 SSD they don't even show in the bios. I have tried connecting the pc cables direct to the 2.5 adapter and still no drives detected. However, a 2.5 standard laptop drive does work and shows in the bios. The 3.5 caddy is a Startech and so are the 2.5 adapters. They all state that they work with SSD's. I have a different design of caddy, still StarTech and this is just the same. So what is the problem? I know the SSD's are OK as they work with direct connections to the PC cables. One is my current boot disk (120GB V300 ) and I want to replace this with a 1TB EVO 840 which is in a caddy so I can swap it without opening the case.

If the drive works when directly connected to the cables, I would just use it that way. Then, the only problem is how to secure the drive so it is not bouncing around the case. Solutions that come to mind include duct tape, electrical tape, zip ties and velcro. Unlike a mechanical drive that needs to be secure, this is less important with an SSD.

I am already using it directly connected, and It is secured within the case in a tool free bracket. I want to use a caddy so I don't have to open the case and fiddle with cables when I want to swap drives.
