My computer froze and I restarted it. After I turned it off and started it back up again, it didn't boot into Windows. At first it was giving me a message about inserting the boot media. I reset it again and loaded windows 10 but it went into a "diagnosing your pc" loop where it would sit there for hours not doing anything. I checked in the case to make sure all of the hard drives were connected. But when I went to bios, it said nothing was in the sata slot that my ssd was plugged into. I restarted again and was met with the same problem. I read that I would have to reset the pc. So I started the process and it is on hanging at "resetting this pc 8%" and has been there for roughly 20 hours. I don't know what I should do as a next step.

So I ended up booting a Linux live USB, and went to the file Explorer. My ssd was there but I could not access it and I got a failed hibernation error. So my ssd is in a coma basically. Put a new ssd in and everything fired right up. Thanks for the support.
Make sure your BIOS is up to date, it can cause some issues if it's a older bios.

If your SSD is not registering in the BIOS, then that's another issue which isn't windows' fault. Definitely update the BIOS, if it doesn't fix, then try using a new sata cable.

If that doesn't work either, it could be a faulty SSD, pop it into another PC and see if it registers.

Would I be safe in shutting down the pc to mess with the sata cables? Is it possible to put the windows 10 ISO on a flash drive and do a fresh install? The windows 10 key is a hardware key or something right? So you select skip/do it later when asked for the product key during installation?

And do I need windows on the machine to update the bios? I would imagine not, but I've only ever updated the bios with a working windows install.

Also, if u need a new ssd, would I still be able to put windows 10 on it since I updated from Windows 7? Or would I need to find my old key and stuff?

Thanks

Yes go ahead and mess with the sata cables when it's shut down.

You can put the windows 10 ISO on a flash drive, but use a program like Rufus to make the flash drive bootable.

Windows 10 will work if you upgrade any of the components EXCEPT the motherboard.

Yes press skip...

You can update the BIOS in the motherboards bios. Just put the bios file on a flash drive.

Okay cool. I'll try that when I get home. And I haven't changed the motherboard so I should be good. I was just concerned about turning it off while it was resetting.

Thanks

So i checked bios, and I have the latest version. I switched sata cables and it booted into windows but kinda didn't. I saw the windows 10 logo and the spinning dots. but then it booted to a black screen in which i can see my cursor. I can move the cursor around but I can't do anything else. This only happens from a full shut down, and then power on. If I restart the pc it goes to a black screen that says a9. and then goes to my "ASRock UEFI setup utility". when googling asrock dr.debug codes, it says it is not posting error. I tried booting into safemode with networking but I was greeted with a black screen with no cursor.

I reset the cmos. It boots to the windows logo with the spinning dots, then goes back to a black screen with just the cursor visible and I can move the cursor around.

Hmm. Well actually yeah, try it even if it's external and see how it works (you can plug it into the USB port, you don't have to gut it out of the external cage).

I couldnt get anywhere where I could install windows onto the other drives. I stuck in my windows 10 USB (PNY brand) and when I went to the boot menu on my mother board, the usb was the only boot option. I could either choose USB: PNY or UEFI: PNY. it brings up the windows setup dialog and menus. I tried the Repair windows install option, and I selected reset this PC to see what would happen. I was met with "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I didn't know you could lock a drive like this?

I went back into advanced options, and selected command prompt. I went into diskpart and listed volumes. I only have one volume. volume 0, which is my usb flash drive

If i completely turn off my pc (i can't get the pc to post if I just restart it. I have to completely power off, then power on.) and go to the advanced troubleshooting menu, I can run command prompt. when going to diskpart and listing volumes, I can see 3 volumes.

volume 0 is listed as C drive with the label : system rese. File system is NTFS. type: partition. Size 100MB status: healthy with no additional info.

volume 1 is listed as D drive with no label. File system is NTFS. type: partition. Size 111GB status: healthy with no additional info.

volume 2 is listed as E drive with no label. File system is NTFS. type: partition. Size 450MB status: healthy with the aditional info as: hidden

Also, I cannot reinstall windows on the drive either. I get a message telling me to boot windows regularly and then start the install process from my USB. If i completely power cycle, I can see my SSD in the boot menu. windows just loads a black screen with cursor.
