Stability without overclocking not there

I have reacently upgraded my system to the following configuration:

AOpen 250 Watts power supply
AOpen AK73 Pro motherboard
AMD Athlon 1 GHz
256 MB 133 MHz from simply technology (single DIMM)
SB Live Platinum 5.1
Creative GForce 2 MX DDR 32 MB
4 GB HD (OLD)
20 GB HD (OLD)
Creative Encore 2 DVD decoder card and newer creative PC-DVD 4.8 Drive
network card

This computer is a bit unstable even for windows, what could it be? I am guessing overloaded power supply but I then disconected the 4 GB HD and I still have the same problem.

It still might be your power supply, looking at that AMD processor and all the other devices in the system.

I removed my creative modem and things went a lot smoother.

Next I am planning to remove the DVD card as I am going to get myself a proper player soon. I hope that helps make things run better

Sounds like the typical IRQ sharing problem that any VIA chipset motherboard can have. Should have tried setting your bios to configure the PCI cards.

I have started having another problem I used to face even back when I had my Intel BX2 board. My computer regularly freezes for a second or less then resums as normal... this is thoroughly anoying

That sounds like either a heat, memory, or APM problem. Disable APM, check your video card to see if the heatsink is hot, check your CPU temps, and use 128MB of name-brand memory.

My CPU runs between 39 and 48 degrees (39 idle, 48 when playing games and doing other intensive tasks), that is a reasonable range isnt it? As for my GForce 2 mx card, it has a HUUUUUUGE fan just below it cooling it, and when I put my finger on the heatsink, it seems to be running within reasonable tempreture (my first voodoo card burnt my finger and left a scar).
As for the ram, I had this problem even back when I was using spectec ram, which has a very high reputation here in the middle east.

All what is left that I can think if is what you said about advanced power management. I have no idea ow to turn that off, but I guess I can figure it out if I fiddle with my bios.

48 is fine for a max temp. I can't think of anything offhand to help except to set your BIOS to configure your PCI PNP cards.

I am still facing this problem with regular unnecessary pauses in my computer..... it realy sucks when I play games... or when I am on the internet trying to type something.

Cant anybody help me? do you need more details?

I have seen this caused by a few different cards, and it was alomost always an IRQ sharing problem-some things do not like to be shared on some motherboards, expecially one with VIA chipsets. So you could try seeing what's shared and tell us.

Go into BIOS, change two settings-first, make BIOS configure your PCI cards (a seting like PNP OS-NO). Second, set your BIOS to assign an IRQ for VGA.
Restart your computer, when it is reconfigured, remove and reistall any devices that have a problem. Then see if your computer works better.
