Is there a way to get an old player to become a coach? I have tried
everything but to no avail.

They decide for themselves whether to become qualified coaches or not.
The game variables for this are entirely random - some players will,
some players won't, and the ability of the player as a player has no
bearing on how good a coach they will become.
