I have 4 users on my machine running XP Pro. Lately when I boot up and
attempt to log into one of my users it doesn't. So I have to power off and
power back on to log on. Any clues as to why this is happening?
I have all the latest and the greatest patches from MS. Some have suggested
to me that all these patches are creating the clogging?

Are you waiting long enough for the logon to take place?

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and logging on there? If that works,
suspect a misbehaving startup program as the source of the problem.

Also, the inability to logon is a side effect of many malware intrusions.
Check the system with an antivirus program that has current virus
definitions installed. Also check the system with anti-spyware software
such as Lavasoft's AdAware.

Do you see any errors in the event logs after a failed attempt to log in?
Hint log in as admin and use Event Viewer.

I use on a regular basis Ad-Aware and have an anti-virus program as well.
Waiting long enough is not an issue, since by the time this happens the pc
simply does not continue to boot up. It freezes on that user log on screen.
How do I access the Event Viewer?

Would the Event Viewer tell me what startup program is creating the problem?

you can try creating another user account and transfering the files there

Log on as an administrator user and then....

Start -> Control Panel -> Performance and maintenance -> Administrative
Tools -> double click Event Viewer.

In the right hand pane double click "System" and see if there are any errors
listed. Normally there will ba alot or entries marked "Information". These
are harmless. Look for those marked "error" with a date and time around when
you last had a failed log on attempt.

After looking in the system log have a look in the Security and Application
logs.

It's possible there will be no errors listed but worth a look.

It might do.

OK I have accessed the Event Viewer and one consistent error I am getting is
in re: TrueVector Service. What is this service's impact and how does it
adversely affect the situation?

It's part of ZoneAlarm.

You responded like I know what ZoneAlarm is.
Please explain.

Sorry. ZoneAlarm is a firewall program, and since you're
apparently running it, I thought you'd know what it is.

OK. I thought I had something called eTrust EZ Armor from CA. Anyway, this
True Vector error then, could it be causing the stalling then?

The firewall in the EZ Armor security suite uses the Zone Alarm firewall
engine. So, yes, the problem with the True Vector service could be related
to the slow/stalled log on.

The service loads before the user profile and sometimes needs to make
several attempts before it loads successfully. This has been an ongoing
problem with this service. It is tweaked to load more efficiently in newer
versions of Zone Alarm but is still slow on some setups. You may want to
check the CA website to see if they have updates for the firewall portion
of EZ Armor.

Also, if you have a lot of startup programs that are configured to check
automatically for an update when launched, they could be complicating the
matter of the firewall service loading. May want to spend some time
reviewing your startup programs and perhaps adjust their auto update
settings. If you decide to disable auto update settings in any startup
programs, remember to manually check for updates now and then.

OK, I regularly check the MSCONFIG and have pretty much unchecked all the
stuff that AUTOMATICALLY checks itself in there. I even have a website I go
to which tells me what programs are OK to maintain and what not. I don't
understand these companies. Why do they want to hog our machines? Anyway,
maybe it's time to look around for a new AV program. I downloaded the latest
and the greatest from CA just now. Thanks guys!
