Hey,

This topic has probably come up a number of times, but I've got a spare ATX power supply I'd like to use outside of a computer. Which pins do I have to connect to what, and where to I put dummy loads?

Green to any ground. I usually use an old hard drive as a base load if nothing else is attached.

Well I've got 2 ceramic 10 ohms resistors with a power rating of 10 wats. Maybe wire them in parallel and stick em on +5 GRND on one of the molexes?

Gee, that seems like an awefully high load, let me run the numbers:

V=IR->I=V/R; I=5/20; I=.25A;

Hey, I guess it's a rather low load! I think it will work.

i thought a PSU had to be hooked up to a MoBo to work?

Ill have a Sapphire 9600pro for sale as soon as i get it back. Had to RMA and theyre sending me a new one!

Later AT power supplies did, they needed a -5v signal I think. But early AT and all ATX power supplies don't. ATX only requires a switching signal, which is green wire to ground.

My micro atx ps (250w) keeps blowing. I don't have a heavy load, and there is no smell as though something overheated. When I turn it on, a small surge just starts the cpu fan then nothing. Is there a particular small component that blows that I can replace rather than keep buying these ps's?

I would love to have a 1000w PS with a 120v in (from back) and one wire out (from back), in a nice case, that plugs into the back of a micro PC (with no ps),
kind of a modular design. Is there anything out there like that? Thanks.
