stand by never works!

Is it me or does stand by never work right? I've had two comps so far (Aptiva and now self built) and stand by, 9 out of 10 times, failed to bring my pc back to life. Also going from 98 to ME doesn't seem to have solved the problem. Is there really a good use for stand by? Are there common programs that run in the backround that make stand by choke? I'm just wondering if anyone else has problems with stand by or if anyone knows the benefits(if any) of using it?

Could be the hdd's you have been using, some of them, once they spin down have to be rebooted again before they will work, I had a few Aptiva's at work that were like that
