Standard VGA Driver only on Vaio Laptop

Greetings all,

I just upgraded my Sony Vaio VGN-SZ491N laptop with an SSD and Windows 7 64-bit.

Unfortunately, as I learned after going to Sony's website, Sony only offers driver support for XP and Vista. While I have been able to get most of the laptop's features up and running with updated drivers from other sources, the display driver is still stumping me.

The display driver is self reporting as "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter." This standard driver won't fill up my screen (4:3 only - not the 16:9 the laptop requires) and is obviously missing all of the graphics acceleration that a proper driver would provide.

It looks like I should be using the Intel 945 drivers, but I can't find Windows 7 64-bit (or 32-bit) versions of the drivers, and when I try to install the Vista versions, it says that I don't meet the minimum system requirements.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can definitively find out what kind of graphics driver I should be looking for, and how to install it in such a way that the computer doesn't think that "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" is the end-all-be-all of graphical computer and refuses to update?

I very greatly appreciate any help you all might be able to offer!

I've actually downloaded the files that you mentioned above, but the computer says I don't meet the minimum requirements for the driver installation.

Is there some way to confirm that I'm actually using the Intel graphics hardware? The Sony page also listed an nVidia card, but I tried that driver as well with no luck.

Do I have to uninstall the VGA driver first?

Is there some other information I can provide to better describe my problem?

We reload Laptops ALL the time in my shops....

See my post above...that's THE ANSWER....

You don't like it....hard luck...there is no way around it....

rdg1101 - Yeah, I definitely grabbed the 64 bit. I grabbed the 32 bit as well before I realized my mistake.

Unfortunately, it's the Device Manager that's reporting Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

Brett - is there any way to force the default VGA driver to use a custom resolution?

Yes, I've tried to use the "Have Disk" option to select the driver files directly. It often looks like it's going to work for a few moments before responding that my computer isn't compatible with the drivers.

I'd like to thank you all for you help - I'm currently prepping to revert back to XP, but I'll check a few times back here to see if anybody has any final suggestions. I'm always amazed at how helpful everyone here is!

The ONLY resolutions you will get with standard VGA are the ones it offers you when you right click the background screen etc..... you cannot force any others without the correct driver.... 🙁

Brett is wrong. Typical repair man, if they can't find an easy fix they claim it is impossible...it is possible.

I have an old Vaio that I use windows 7 on. The trick is that you need to got o the sony site and download the Vista ATI graphics driver.
Then right click on the file and select compatibility mode. Select Vista ...it will work (I know as I have just done my own after a fresh install in Windows 7). I had forgotten all this and could not get the screen to connect to the TV with the generic VGA adapter.
Now Catalyst is installed and all works well,

Beware the 'definitive' advice of people like Brett.. As much as they would like to think so, they don't know everything.
