Glanced at the Matrix site and only saw an option to buy via dl. Is it
going to be available over the counter or via mail order? Thanks.

Yes, it will be available via CD. In fact, I just got my CD review copy
today.

If I understood correctly, it's looks like part of the price includes the
right to request a backup CD, should you lose your downloaded copy via a
harddrive failure or something. I found this a little strange, as I assume
most folks would backup the game onto a CD immediately after downloading it.
Of course, I'm assuming that most people have a burner these days. Also,
the illustrations at Matrix show a game box, which made me think the game is
going to be physically sold at some point.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting the game, but not sure that I want to
do the download on my slow connection.

I always burn a backup for any software I purchase and download. But of
course not all folks have burners or broadband. I have just started playing
it and it seems pretty good. It has a 150 page manual in pdf format that
explains the game in great detail. It has dynamic campaigns and you can also
fly capital ships in addition to fighters. It seems very well done.

Heh, heh, keep up your enticing talk and I'm going to dl it over my slow
connection. After all, I dled Vega Strike and that was 163 megs.

I don't usually dupe games I physically buy, as I never use the CD's again
after I install them (always run them with no-cd cracks). Without any
wear-factor, I figure the original CD's will last the rest of my life. :)

I've been holding back on the download because of the imminent patch.
I went to get it on thursday (via download) but it was still showing
as version 4.0.0. from the UK. Will check back tonight. Do us a favour
Allan, post up a link here to your review please.

Incidentally, I liked your email spam trap thing, did you get my
second reply? It didn't ask for confirmation details so I wasn't sure
if it had got through. A good idea though. But where do you buy your
Viagra now?

It is my understanding the 4.0.2 patch is emmanant so why wait? I am
currently in the midst of the 1st campaign and things are getting hot. I
just completed a planetary strike mission against a factory. I was returning
to space when a bunch of enemy capital ships started to engage our task
force. Fighters were everywhere, missle and laser blasts being exchanged
between the heavies. It was pure chaos and pure excitement.. I killed a
couple of fighters but took heavy damage. I returned to our carrier with
heavy damage. It was quite a ride 🙂

Wow, this sounds like the game I've been waiting 10 years for. I haven't
been too inspired since "TIE Fighter", believe it or not. That game blew me
away because of the melee experience like you describe.

Have you tried commanding a fleet or task force? I read that it is part of
this game, but I couldn't find much info on how it works. I might just buy
the game anyway.

I think you have to gain a certain rank before you command bigger ships in
the campaign. I am just a lowly ensign now.I haven't finished reading the
massive 150 manual so it probably explains it in there. In the training
missions, you get to command a carrier and from what I have seen it looks
pretty detailed. You can set, arm and launch fighters for various missions
like escort, recon and anti-shipping. You also get to handle damage
control, energy allocation(shields, weapons etc), sensors, probes and of
course firing the ship's heavy weapons. You can also have the computer
handle some of these duties. The campaigns are dynamic which extends the
playability. I restarted the first campaign several times and no two play
out the exact same way. I have only scratched the surface of the game but
what I have seen so far is really good.

I have just downloaded and started it. I finished the first two training
exercises, but for some reason I never saw the "ILS hoops" so I'm not sure I
landed correctly in either one. I might have to read that manual first...

Did you hit alt-I? I found it helps to turn up the gamma setting a bit.

Yes. Actually, I found that you have to be oriented towards the correct
landing bay or runway to see the hoops after hitting alt-I. But you can
land on the wrong one and pass.

Anyway, I just completed the training, and now Ensign Noobie is ready to
defend the empire, or republic, or whatever -- who cares -- I just want to
shoot stuff.

I ran into that same problem last night. My ship's computer was knocked out
in combat so maybe that's why you couldn't see the ILS "hoops". Heck, maybe
it is just a random bug 🙂

Got it Allan. I'm hopelessly lost though. It's very early days but I
can't make head nor tail of the training missions, I reckon my
joystick isn't functioning properly cos I just keep flying backwards,
that can't be right.
It looks great and has loads of little systems and sub-menus which I
like but I may have to admit early defeat and use arcade mode because
I'm completely confused by the Newtonian model. I couldn't play I-War
for the same reason, my feeble mind just can't seem to grasp the whole
moving-in-one-direction-whilst-pointing-in-another thing.
Does anybody remember what the flight model on Elite was like? I never
seemed to have any trouble with that and I'm sure that was Newtonian,
mind you, I was a lot younger then, many more active brain cells.

I will print out the manual and then have a good read, but whether I
crack it or not, milo deserved my money for the effort he's put in.

I wouldn't use the Newtonian model until you are familiar with the game.
What helped me a lot was changing the HUD from the simplistic view. I also
upped the gamma settings to so it wouldn't be quite so dark on my system.
You really have to read the massive manual to get a handle on all the
nuances of the game. What also helped was printing out the key commands at
the end of the manual. Also be prepared to die often 🙂 I am playing on the
intermediate level and the AI is pretty challanging. Let me know if you have
questions.

Good luck! You can't even comprehend Onslaught. =)

I'll read the manual first before I pester you. I have printed out the
keyboard commands but as I say, I can't seem to make the controllers
work properly, it won't even let me use the mouse control. It's bound
to be something obvious that I can't see, I've probably installed the
wrong game altogether or something.

Not the original Elite, no. That had a nice but fairly typical
arcade flight model. Frontier: Elite 2 was the first Braben
adventure to use Newtonian physics.

That's odd. Somebody else just reported the same problem
yesterday in this newsgroup. Starshatter uses a keyboard
key to switch in and out of mouse controlled flight. I usually
describe this as the ~ key, or the key above the TAB key on
most keyboards. On my keyboard, this key also has the
backwards single-quote on it `.

If you press this key in flight, what happens?

Perhaps the key is different on UK keyboards? Try going
into the Options screen, and select the Controls tab. On
the left side of the screen is a list box of key mappings.
Scroll down to the bottom of this list and you will find the
mapping for "Toggle Mouse Flight". Double click that item
to display the key mapping dialog box. Then just type in
the key you want to use to toggle mouse steering on and
off, and click the Accept button to save. While you are in
there, make sure the mouse control drop list on the right
side of the Controls tab is set to "Mouse Look" or "Virtual
Joystick".

If you still can't get it to work, please contact me at
milo@starshatter.com and I will try to figure out what is
going wrong.

Thanks,

Of course I can comprehend it, I just don't understand it. It's this
simple distinction that you are unable to appreciate my man.

Fascinating.

I looked down there [at your sig]. I don't see anything there. =P

Because you lack the wit. My sig was designed for the subtlety of a
