Start button missing

please help me my start button in taskbar is missing

If you are still having issues with the Taskbar and desktop icons not appearing, do the following:
When Windows XP has loaded, press the Windows key (next by the Spacebar with the MS logo) and the letter R together

This should bring up the Run prompt

Type in "sfc /runnow" (without the quotes)

This will scan your Windows files looking for errors -- you will very likely need the installation CD handy
