i just got a new laptop which came with windows ten. it is less than two months old, and, the start button will not work at all. i can't turn the computer on or off, get to the system restore, or anything. absolutely nothing happens when i click on the start buttonsince i know little about computers, and even less about this windows 10 travesty what is an easy fix?

Solution
You wouldn't be able to return it for a refund, we both meant in do a rma request after you register the laptop.
HP will allow you to buy a new warrenty for it, if there is not one valid at the time pf purchase.
Ship it through priority mail usps small box which is about 7.00 with a signature on delivery.
2 months old? RMA it my friend
Don't attempt a fix that will void warranty, just minor things like......
Try removing ram cards and reinstall as they may of come loose
Does it have a charge light on when plugged in? tried without battery installed?power plug not loose? power charger still working ( a good knock while on can blow one up)?

when it was working i did the shut down trip. it is an hp15.
i have read a couple of other answers, but, am not able to do them, or nothing happens when i do

the charge light is on and nothing is loose. what i use works okay, i guess. i just can't shut it down, or get to the system restore, which is what i was trying to do when i discovered it

in control panel power options on the power plan setting you will find a setting on what to do when i press the power button, maybe set on do nothing?
I am a little confused as to what is the problem? As you first said it wont turn on/off at all but now it's just won't turn off or restore only?

that's the thing. i can't get to the control panel. or anything else. you have to right click on start and nothing happens with start

have you changed any drivers since you got it? drivers through windows updates or from hp. Changed bios settings?
You might have to restart pc in safe mode then and restore to an earlier date before troubles started

Hmm if you could use a linux live cd and try a shut down with it, we could narrow it down quickly to hardware or the os.
If you can do that fine with a linux live cd, we'll go ahead and get you started with reinstalling windows 10.

@Mark I don't think hes need to rma it it maybe a windows problem.

That was a response to his dead laptop altogether description initially, but then changed his symptoms

no sir. ihadn't done anything like that at all. i don't know how to change drivers.

i had a miracl,, at least sort of. this morning when i opened the laptop,it didn't want to start, so, i held the shutdown button for about fifteen seconds or so, and it closed it down. when i started it again, it went through something about updates, and came on, and the sart button works. unfortunately though, i still don't know what i did to make it stop i the first place.

thank all of y'all that responded. i can at least have it for future reference.

bythe way though, i could not easily return the thing even after just two months. i have onver 300gb of stuff stored on here.
