Hey all. I'm having a very frustrating time with my start menu. I am on a fresh installation of Windows 10 on new hardware. Basically no matter what I do the start menu refuses to show the accent color correctly. I can be in the settings menu, I can cycle through the Light and Dark and Custom themes, I can change colors and tweak all the settings, but at the end of the day my actual Start Menu will never appear like it does in the preview pane on the settings menu. Here's a screen shot, you can see the settings pane open and my start menu. The app list is missing the squares you see on most Windows app lists and contrast is not correct on the main icons. On my previous installation the preview would match the start menu exactly:

I've reached out to MS for help through their online chat but they have been unable to help me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really miss the look of my old Start Menu.

At one point the MS tech had me do another fresh install of my GPU drivers. I'm running a EVGA GeForce 2080 TI with the newest drivers.

Solution
With Windows 10 version 20H2, Microsoft has removed the system accent color behind tiles, which will make your live tiles translucent with blur effects, and tiles will finally match with light or dark mode.

not sure if that is difference you are seeing

Whoa. Okay. Man. So it's not a bug, it's a feature. I really hate it. I miss the old look. Well if there's a way to get it back, let me know! Thank you.

if you do the next bit, careful with trustediunstallers permissions, and backup registry before changing anything in it - https://neosmart.net/wiki/backup-restore-registry/

Hey,
I found out how to do this using register editor, so what you do is open regedit and go to

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\0\2093230218]
and you change

“EnabledState” to dword:00000000

You will need access to the register key, so you can right click on it, go to permissions, then advanced and then on the top where it says “TrustedInstaller” click on change and enter the group “Administrators” now you can change the key.

(Sorry if this explanation is complicated it is a quick reply from my phone and the website isnt shown correctly on mobile if you dont get what Im saying you can go to https://www.howtogeek.com/262464/how-to-gain-full-permissions-to-edit-protected-registry-keys/ for a good explanation on how to get the permissions. If you changed the key you restart your device and your start menu should look like normal!
