start menu desktop icons missing

My desktop computer hasnt been showing the start menu or desktop icons. I tried the ctrl. alt. and delete and created a new browse and typed explorer.exe and clicked and then rebooted my computer like all the videos I have watched said to do but It didnt work. can you please help me I have to do a project.

Did you get a virus? Have you run a scan for a virus? Can you see your files from C:\Documents and Settings under your user account name?
