Solution
Common problem. Solutions vary.

First of all, this problem is on a list of issues being addressed.

I can only tell you my experience but I had a similar experience on a completely different system also running W10.

*Start Menu freezing (in order of solutions):
1. Try hitting the WINDOWS key
2. CTRL-ALT-DEL then sign out and sign in again
3. Reboot

For myself, every time the Start Menu issue occurred I could just press the WIN key and I was back again. I talked to others that this did NOT help.

Other:
I did a CLEAN install of Windows 10 following this and other issues. My system is almost perfect now. The Start Menu issue is gone, and i just get some occasional reboots due to a BSOD (latest is memory issues).

Other:
I noticed before the Clean Install of W10 that my Start Menu worked when it appeared but not roughly 30 seconds later thus indicating a program loading into memory may have been the cause. You can learn how to DISABLE programs from msconfig->startup and see if that helps narrow down the program causing the issues.
