[SOLVED] start search bar greyed out

Solution
That is usually a sign that your OS is corrupt and possibly caused due to malware. You should try and make sure you've backed up all critical content from your installation drive, before you proceed to running a malware scan(malwarebytes) and then reinstalling your OS with the latest installer made by Windows Media Creation Tools.

Hi Guys. Heres what worked for me on multiple PCs.
Open Regedit:
navigate to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search
Make sure that the key, Cortana Consent is 0
Make a New D-Word 32 called "BingSearchEnabled" and set it to 0

Restart and you should be able to search

Click on windows start, type here, just brings up a greyed out box. Can type words but nothing shows up..
Seems to have happened just recently... Microsoft somehow managed to break Bing search and it stops searching in our task bars.

If manually editing the registry in Regedit is daunting there's a link to a .reg file that you can download and it will do it for you.

This fixed the issue for me.
